Your best customer just asked ChatGPT: "What's the best project management tool for remote teams?"

Your product wasn't mentioned.

They didn't click your ad. They didn't search you on Google. They got an answer from an AI — and your brand wasn't in it. For them, you might as well not exist.

This is happening every day. Millions of people now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity for product recommendations. If you're not in those answers, you're losing demand before anyone ever opens a search engine.

The fix has a name: GEO — Generative Engine Optimization. It's the practice of optimizing your brand so AI assistants recommend you. And it's becoming as important as SEO.

Why AI Answers Are Different From Search Results

Google gives you 10 blue links. AI assistants give you a conversation.

When someone asks Perplexity to compare CRM platforms or tells Claude to recommend a billing tool for startups, the AI synthesizes an answer from training data, live search, and structured sources. It picks a handful of brands to mention. No pagination. No "page 2." If you're not in that short list, you're invisible.

Worse: the user often trusts that answer. They don't go to Google to double-check. They take the recommendation and move on.

The Signals AI Models Actually Use

AI models don't rank by keywords and backlinks the way Google does. They look for:

  • Clarity — Can the model understand what your company does in one sentence?
  • Consistency — Does your positioning appear the same across your site, docs, and reviews?
  • Structured data — Schema markup, entity definitions, and machine-readable formats
  • Citations — Third-party mentions (G2, Capterra, review sites, news) that back up your claims

If your website is a blur of marketing jargon and your structured data is thin, models struggle to classify you. They default to brands they can parse clearly.

A Simple 4-Week GEO Audit

You don't need a massive budget to start. You need a baseline.

Week 1: Find out where you stand

Pick 20–30 prompts your buyers actually ask. Things like:

  • "Best [category] tool for [use case]"
  • "Compare [your category] platforms"
  • "[Your category] vs [competitor]"

Run those prompts through ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. Count how often your brand appears. Note who does show up. That's your visibility baseline.

Week 2: Fix the low-hanging fruit

  • Tighten your homepage headline so a model can understand your product in one sentence
  • Add schema markup (Organization, Product, FAQ) where it's missing
  • Make your pricing and features easy to parse — clear headings, concrete numbers

Week 3: Strengthen citations

  • Claim and complete profiles on G2, Capterra, and relevant review sites
  • Get a few case studies or quotes that mention your category and use case
  • Publish clear comparison content ("X vs Y") that AI models can extract from

Week 4: Test again

Re-run your prompts. See if your visibility improved. Iterate.

GEO Isn't Replacing SEO — It's Adding to It

Traditional SEO still matters. Most traffic today still comes from Google. But AI search is growing fast. Teams that optimize for both channels capture demand from both.

Think of it this way: SEO gets you on the map. GEO gets you into the conversation.

The Bottom Line

The question isn't Should we care about AI visibility? For most B2B brands, the answer is yes.

The question is How fast can we make it measurable?

Start with a baseline. Track 20–30 prompts. Improve your clarity and schema. Strengthen your citations. Re-test. That's the loop. The teams that run it now will have a head start as more buyers shift to AI.
